Perry was running against Romney six months ago, and now Romney runs against Obama. So in a “an enemy of my enemy is my friend” logic this makes perfect sense.

I have considered that this could be a reason, but it would probably make more sense to accept the funding and then secede anyway. In other words, to take the money and run.
